ICS Chorus – Spring Session

ICS Chorus01
Hi Families!

Thank you all for such a wonderful winter concert! The kids are still buzzing about it, and it could not have been possible without the support of such awesome families.
Linked below are the sign-ups for ICS Chorus from January-May of 2018 (15 classes). Instead of having one group of students on Wednesdays, you will now be able to choose to sign your child up for either Chorus-A (Mondays) or Chorus-B (Wednesdays) from 4-5PM. The only difference between the choruses are the rehearsal days. Both choruses will have 21 students, have the same lesson plans, be learning the same music, and for students in grades 1-3.
Please sign your child up for just one of the choruses (not both).
On Wednesday, May 9th, 2018 we will have a combined ICS Chorus Concert (all 42 students singing together) in the movement room at 55 Willoughby.
Details are in the Sawyer link. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and have a wonderful winter break!
All the best,

Thank you!

With another great year coming to a close I just wanted to thank everyone again for your endless support and time! There is a true community here at ICS, and the overwhelming interest and love put into the music program by the families is so wonderful.

Some families have asked about private music lessons this summer. Although I will be away for a few weeks, there are spot available for a few private lessons. If you are interested, feel free to email me at kgarcia@icsnyc.org for more info!

The Kindergarten performance of Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree is up on YouTube, and I hope to have the 1st & 2nd grade video up shortly. I am SO PROUD of all of our students!!! Have a wonderful and musical summer, and see you in August!

One Week Away!

Only one more week until the big day! While we don’t require students to dress up, we encourage the following attire for the spring concert next Thursday. If you have any questions, please let me know! See you all there!Clothes - ICS Spring Concert 2017

Ukuleles: Unit 1

The time is here! We have begun learning about the parts of the ukulele, how we number our fingers, and how to read chord charts. Feel free to ask your kids where the “bridge” or “neck” of the ukulele are, and whether they can wiggle their third finger!

January – The Ukuleles Are HERE!

Thanks to all of your generous support, we reached our goal on DonorsChoose.org and raised enough money to get an iPad for our music classroom! I can’t wait for the students to be able to record performances, listen to different types of singing and instruments, and manipulate quarter notes, eight notes, and quarter rests to create their own unique rhythms using programs like “Tempo Island Rhythm” from the awesome Freddie The Frog music book series. THANK YOU!

The Winter Concert videos are now up on the ICS YouTube Page. The Winter Concert would not have been such a success without the endless support from our families. These kids sound great, and I look forward to being able to mold and grow their singing abilities even more as we move forward.

Our ukuleles are HERE! Well actually they’ve been here since September in boxes underneath the risers but many of the kids don’t know that;) NOW THEY’RE HERE! We will begin learning about the body of the ukulele, string numbers, and fret numbers in a few short weeks.

If there are any adult seasoned (or completely unexperienced) guitar or ukulele players out there that might be interested in coming in and giving some of our classes an unplugged performance, interested in helping out during some classes as the kids find their way around this awesome instrument (the more adults in the room the better haha), or even if you’re interested in coming in once a week or month and helping me keep these ukes in tune, please email me (kgarcia@icsnyc.org)!

September – Music

This month in music we have been exploring the procedures and classroom rules. At the end of each lesson this year we will read a short story about anything from character building or music history to music notation, instruments, and our voices. One of the students’ stories we have been reading this month is an awesome book called “The Worst Day Of My Life Ever” by Julia Cook, that focusses on how to truly listen and follow and instructions. img_3652
